Since the military takeover in 2021, Myanmar has become the country with the highest civilian casualties from landmines and explosive weapons, according to the 2025 annual report by the Landmine Monitor organization.
Year by year, the number of casualties has increased, and 86% of those affected are civilians. In 2024, 2,029 people were killed due to landmines and military weapons; in 2023, 1,003 people died; and in 2022, 545 people lost their lives. Since 1999, the total recorded number of deaths has reached 9,206.
However, it is noted that the actual number on the ground may be even higher.
The military council has reportedly used civilians as human shields, forcing them to clear landmines at the frontlines, a practice that constitutes a severe violation of human rights and international law.
Ongoing clashes continue across the country, and hospitals and clinics have been targeted, making it increasingly difficult to provide treatment and care for injured civilians.
