In Myitkyina, which is under military council control, theft and robbery incidents have reportedly become increasingly severe. Residents said that a burglary occurred today, February 11, at around 11:00 a.m. in Shwe Nyaung Pyin Ward, when a thief broke into a home.

“Thieves in Myitkyina have become very bold. It has gotten worse over the past year or two. Today as well, we heard that a thief entered a house in broad daylight. Luckily, he was caught,” said a male resident of Myitkyina.

The suspect reportedly entered the house around 11:00 a.m. to steal, but was spotted on CCTV and apprehended. He is said to be a resident of Rampu Ward, and the ward administrator from Rampu came to take him away.

“Myitkyina has become very bad. They steal things outside houses—even light bulbs and worn shoes. It’s already lucky if they don’t break into the house and do something worse. Even if thieves are caught and handed over to the police, they are released shortly after and go back to stealing. I think gambling dens are also contributing to the rise in theft,” the man added.

In Myitkyina, not only valuable household items but even light bulbs and used shoes are being stolen from homes.

Local residents say that the rise in theft and robbery is due to a lack of effective action by the relevant authorities, the growing number of local gambling operations, and limited economic opportunities.
