Elections Will Not Be Held in Two Townships in Kachin State, SAC Announces

The election commission under the State Administration Council (SAC) announced on January 20 that elections will not be able to be held across all areas of Mansi and Momauk Township in Kachin State.
Although the election commission had announced on December 28 that elections would be held in Mansi and Momauk townships, areas controlled by the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and revolutionary forces; as part of Phase (3) of the elections, the commission changed its position and issued a new announcement as Phase (3) of the elections approached.
According to the announcement, Phase (3) of the elections in Kachin State was planned to be held in Bhamaw Township, Mansi Township, Momauk Township, Hpakant, and Shwegu.
However, some villages in Bhamaw Township have already been designated as areas where elections cannot be held.
In addition, Shwegu Town remains under the control of the KIA, and in Hpakant Township, the KIA controls some villages, where intense fighting continues to occur frequently.
The Union Election Commission has already announced that Phase (3) of the elections will be held nationwide on January 25 across a total of 63 townships.
