In areas of Kachin State that have been captured and are now controlled by KIA allied forces, administration is being carried out in line with the KIO system. As part of this governance, strict anti-drug operations targeting what is regarded as a common enemy of the entire Kachin people are being increasingly implemented, according to sources.
A local resident described the ongoing anti-drug measures in KIO controlled areas, saying, “Right now, drug checks are conducted at every KIA checkpoint. Civilians traveling on the roads are also searched, and if someone is suspected, even their bags are inspected. Anyone found with drugs is arrested immediately. At the Nang Zaw checkpoints, inspections are especially strict.”
In the Pangwa area as well, awareness raising campaigns are being regularly carried out in accordance with the KIA’s administrative approach. As a result, the number of people involved in drug trafficking and drug use in that area has reportedly decreased significantly.
Previously, churches and community based anti-drug groups worked together intensively to combat drug abuse and trafficking.
However, in recent times, anti-drug efforts have not been as effective as before. Consequently, in areas currently under military junta control, such as Myitkyina and other urban areas the sale and use of drugs have become increasingly visible and widespread.
