Schools in KIO-administered territories are preparing to integrate the GED-level education system into their new curriculum, with plans to incorporate select syllabi from Cambridge University. The KIO Education Central Office is systematically coordinating these efforts, according to sources.

A teacher from Mai Ja Yang town explained that the new upper-level education system will include portions of first and second-year university syllabi from foreign institutions to better prepare students for higher education abroad.

"This year, we’ve managed to open classes up to G-11. G-12 will be introduced next year. The new upper-level curriculum includes first and second-year materials from American and European universities for G-11 and G-12. This is designed to give students a foundational advantage if they pursue further studies abroad," the teacher said.

Currently, most KIO-administered regions are working to extend classes up to G-11 this year, with policies already drafted to begin teaching select university-level syllabi from abroad within the new upper-level education system.

However, G-12 will only be introduced in the 2026-2027 academic year. The new curriculum framework is being developed in collaboration with the Kachin State Comprehensive University (KSCU) and the Mai Ja Yang Institute of Education (MIED) under the KIO Education Central Office.

At present, the upper-secondary system (up to G-10) continues to teach six subjects: Kachin language, Burmese language, English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Under the new system, Social Studies will include Economics, Geography, History, and Civics, while Science will cover Life Science, Earth Science, Physics, and Chemistry.

Though the new education system was initially implemented last academic year, it was only up to G-10. Starting this year, it will extend to G-11.

The KIO’s new education system will also be introduced in all schools within its controlled territories, including Laiza and Mai Ja Yang, as well as in areas captured since March 7, 2024.
