In Myitkyina, the capital town of Kachin State, power outages have become severe, with electricity reportedly available for only about 2 to 3 hours at a time, according to local residents. Locals say that the shortage and long interruptions in electricity supply have been occurring since the beginning of 2026.

“This year, it’s worse. Electricity sometimes comes only after two days. Most days, it comes for only 1 or 2 hours. The timing is also uncertain. Even when it comes, it’s barely enough to fill water. More importantly, right now is the period when grade 12 students are taking exams. Even if electricity doesn’t come regularly, students should at least be able to study,” said one local resident.

Since electricity comes only for about 2 hours every two days, residents face difficulties in their daily household work and for those running businesses, due to insufficient power supply. In other neighborhoods, electricity is slightly available, but in areas where government officials live, power supply is regular, causing locals to say that electricity distribution is unequal.

Myitkyina town relies primarily on hydroelectric power, and during the summer each year, electricity production decreases due to insufficient water supply, reducing overall power availability.

However, this year, the electricity supply rate has dropped significantly compared to previous years, and locals suggest that the military administration may be deliberately cutting power to pressure the authorities to carry out dam operations at the confluence.
