According to local residents, in the Indawgyi area of Mohnyin, Kachin State, militias from the Shanni Nationalities Army (SNA) are pressuring and threatening students under the age of 18 to attend military training.
It is reported that SNA troops, in cooperation with village administrators, are recruiting new soldiers under a system requiring one person per household. In addition, they are making middle school and high school students sign agreements to attend military training.
“They are now going around with ward administrators making children who have just finished their exams sign up to attend military training,” a local resident said.
Since early February, the military council and Shanni militia forces have been conducting recruitment drives in villages across the Indawgyi region, including Mine Naung and Bo Te Kone.
Currently, in Indawgyi and Bamauk areas of Kachin State, clashes are frequently occurring between joint forces of the military council and the SNA’s Kyar Phyu column, and allied revolutionary forces.
