Today, June 9, 2025, marks 14 years since the resumption of civil war in Kachin State.

The renewed conflict between the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and the military forces, which began on June 9, 2011, has led to a continuous increase in the number of displaced civilians fleeing the violence.

Following the collapse of the ceasefire between the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) and the Myanmar military, clashes in 2011 forced over 200,000 people to abandon their homes.

Moreover, after the 2021 military coup, intensified fighting has further escalated displacement. The KIA’s "Operation 0307," launched on March 7, 2024, has exacerbated clashes between the military and the KIA, causing even more civilians to flee daily.

Due to the ongoing conflict, over 200,000 people from more than 400 villages in Kachin State remain displaced. While some have returned to their homes, many still live in displacement camps, and even those who had returned are being forced to flee again.

According to the Kachin Humanitarian Concern Committee (KHCC), there were over 160 displacement camps in Kachin State as of 2023. The UNHCR reports that renewed fighting in 2024 has pushed the number of displaced people beyond 200,000, with figures rising daily.

BNI-Myanmar Peace Monitor states that between February 2021 (post-coup) and May 2025, the junta conducted 171 airstrikes in Kachin State, displacing 69,090 people.

Currently, over 200,000 displaced people in Kachin State face severe challenges, including insufficient aid, lack of security guarantees, worsening camp conditions, increased restrictions on humanitarian assistance, and declining international donor support.

Recently, heavy clashes have continued in Hpakant, Waingmaw, Bhamo, and other areas, with ongoing military operations.

Kachin State remains in a severe humanitarian crisis, with more than 200,000 displaced people still in urgent need of protection and assistance.
