145 Civilians Killed in Over Six Months by Military Junta’s Heavy Weapons Shelling; 10 Deaths from Kachin State

According to a statement released by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), from January this year to August 12, a total of 68 women and 78 men were killed nationwide due to heavy weapons shelling by the military junta.
In total, 146 civilians have been killed by the junta’s heavy weapons attacks within this period, including 29 children under the age of 18. Tanintharyi Region recorded the highest number of deaths with 27 casualties, while Kachin State saw 10 deaths.
On August 7, in Strategic (Byuha) Hill, Hpakant Township, Kachin State, troops from the military council stationed in the area fired heavy weapons at Seik Mu Village Tract. One shell landed and exploded within the compound of the Kachin Baptist Church in Seik Mu, killing a female internally displaced villager who was hit by shrapnel.
In recent days, the junta has intensified military operations in the Hpakant area, carrying out not only heavy weapons shelling but also frequent indiscriminate aerial bombings, causing a rising number of civilian casualties.
Since the start of the Spring Revolution, the total number of democracy activists and civilians killed has reached 7,060. In relation to the unlawful coup, a total of 29,530 people have been arrested, of which 22,291 remain in detention. Among those still detained, 10,970 have been sentenced to prison terms.
