Abduction Becoming More Frequent in Myitkyina

In recent days, residents report that arbitrary abduction of civilians have been happening more frequently in Myitkyina, Kachin State, alongside increasingly strict security checks.
“A lot of inspections are happening on the streets these days. We often hear that people are being arrested without reason,” said a female resident of Myitkyina.
Thise abduction include young people, men of middle age, and even women, with arrests taking place both inside the town and in surrounding areas. Local sources also stated that it is unclear which armed groups are responsible for these arrests.
On August 18, five young men from Myitkyina’s Shatapru Ward (Part 5) were suddenly arrested by a group that arrived in two cars. On the same day, one of three female visitors at Manau ground was also taken away.
Since the military takeover, gambling operations and criminal activities such as theft and robbery have increased in Myitkyina. Although the military has tightened security checks both inside and outside the town to address this, local residents say these arbitrary arrests of civilians have left them feeling increasingly worried for their safety day by day.
