Residents of Myitkyina say that passengers are facing many difficulties due to the sharp rise in air ticket prices for routes such as Myitkyina-Yangon and Myitkyina-Mandalay.
“For education purposes, I had to travel to Yangon but the current ticket price is nearly 900,000 kyats, which is too expensive. I couldn’t afford to buy the ticket. Even though the road situation is not good, I planned to travel by car instead. Traveling from Myitkyina to Yangon by car costs just a little over 300,000 kyats,” said a resident of Myitkyina.
Since after September 11, the one way ticket price for the Myitkyina-Yangon route has climbed depending on the airline, reaching up to nearly 900,000 kyats. Previously, Myitkyina-Yangon flights cost only a little over 600,000 kyats.Similarly, Myitkyina-Mandalay ticket prices have also slightly increased.
At present, ticket costs around 800000- to 900000 kyats depending on the airline. As a result, people traveling not only for work but also for health and education are facing many hardships with the soaring ticket prices. They note that despite rising fares, flights are relatively safer compared to traveling by car, especially given the ongoing armed conflicts.
Additionally, frequent clashes along the Myitkyina-Mandalay road have caused vehicles with hundreds of passengers to become stranded, making many travelers choose flights over road transport. It is also reported that the rise in ticket prices is due to the growing demand for air travel, as passengers prefer flights over road routes because of the difficulties and risks along the highways.
