A military airstrike on a monastery in the non-combat zone of Sagaing Region’s Indaw Township has killed two civilians and left eight others seriously injured, according to local residents.

The attack occurred around 12:30 PM on April 1, when junta forces bombed the area using two fighter jets. The jets, identified as Y-12 light attack aircraft from the Myeikthila Air Base, dropped bombs near the monastery’s pagoda hill in Indaw Township. The explosions not only caused civilian casualties but also damaged a revered Buddha statue.

Despite recent earthquakes on March 28 that affected the junta’s Naypyidaw and Tada-U airbases, the military has continued conducting airstrikes using operational airbases in Magway and Myeikthila.

Meanwhile, as southern Myanmar struggles with earthquake relief efforts, the junta has not provided aid but has instead intensified aerial and drone attacks in Kachin State.
