In Hpakant area, clashes involving heavy weapons broke out between the Myanmar military (SAC) and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) on January 25, the day the SAC held its Phase 3 election. As a result of the military’s shelling, at least five civilians were killed, according to sources.

During the morning hours of that day, artillery shells landed and exploded in Seng Tawng Ward (3), injuring three people. In addition, shelling in Nga Pyaw Taw Ward caused injuries to two more civilians.

Furthermore, due to security conditions during the SAC’s Phase 3 election period, polling stations in Hpakant town were reportedly closed. Reports also indicate that civilians’ safety is currently of serious concern not only in Hpakant town but also in Waimaw and Bhamaw towns.

Since the beginning of 2026, the SAC has carried out deliberate jet airstrikes targeting locations where internally displaced civilians were taking shelter.

Similarly, on the 22nd, despite there being no fighting, the military carried out an airstrike on Kawng Ja village, killing more than 20 civilians and injuring at least 30 others.
