In Katha town, Sagaing Region, although clashes that began on January 3 have subsided, houses continue to be burned and destroyed due to drone bomb attacks launched by the military junta, according to local sources.
On January 14, the military junta carried out up to ten attacks using drone bombs and heavy weapons, resulting in at least ten houses being burned down and reports of civilian deaths.
Since the fighting first broke out, local residents have fled their homes. However, some people remain in place because they cannot afford to flee elsewhere, according to information received.
Those who managed to flee reportedly escaped with only their lives, and Katha displaced persons are currently facing hardships on all fronts, a displaced resident said.
“We had to leave all our valuable belongings behind. There’s no certainty that anything will still be there when we return. We’ve also heard that looting is rampant. It’s not easy to go back either. Even now, bombs and heavy weapons are still being fired. Things have become very difficult,” the displaced person said.
Residents of the Katha area are relying on themselves and taking shelter in places they consider safe. They are in urgent need of assistance, including household items, food, and medical supplies.
Fighting in the Katha area began on December 28. Although it became relatively calm on January 3, the military junta is continuing various forms of shooting and attacks.
