As calls continue inside Myanmar for the immediate release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners, individuals who had been charged under Section 505(a) were granted amnesty on November 27.

The recent amnesty included those who had been charged under Section 505(a), as well as fugitives who had previously escaped arrest, with their cases now being closed. However, the majority of political prisoners continue to be detained, and it is learned that State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is not among those released.

The military council is proceeding with its planned election roadmap, and political circles say that this amnesty granted roughly one month before the election to allow people to vote is intended as a gesture of goodwill.

Across the country, around 700 individuals charged and imprisoned under Section 505(a), including those still facing trial, were released under the amnesty. However, more than 2,000 other political prisoners remain in detention.

It is also reported that since the military coup in Myanmar, more than 30,000 people have been unlawfully arrested, of whom 20,000 remain detained, while another 10,000 have been sentenced to prison.
