According to local residents, after the KIO government implemented anti-drug operations in Mandong Village, Chipwi Township, Kachin State, the number of alcoholics and drug users has significantly decreased.

“In the past, there were many people in this village selling drugs, alcoholics, and heroin users. There were also a lot of thieves. But now, after the anti-drug campaign with name lists and all, we can clearly see that the numbers have dropped. There are hardly any thieves anymore,” said a male resident of Mandong.

Currently, the KIO government has established an anti-drug committee in Mandong, collecting the names of drug users, admitting them to rehabilitation camps, and providing treatment. After (6) months of rehabilitation, they are sent to attend further training.

According to local sources, after attending the (6)-month training, the individuals are assigned suitable jobs in appropriate locations and are supervised as part of their reintegration.

“In Mandong now, the KIA collects the names of all alcoholics and drug users, eradicates drugs from the village, sends them to a (6) month training, and then assigns them jobs in the camps where needed. One thing is, if family members bring them in, they get to choose the job placement,” the same resident added.

Mandong Village was previously known for having a high number of alcohol and drug users and dealers. However, after the KIO government’s anti-drug initiatives, the numbers have noticeably decreased, according to local residents.

Similarly, due to public demand, anti-drug rehabilitation camps have been opened in the Chinese border areas of Sadone, Kan Paing Ti, Chipwi, Panwa, Lagwe Phimaw, and Kanphan. Currently, around (500) people are still undergoing treatment.

Since April 2014, the KIO government has been implementing community-based anti-drug operations through the leadership of the KIO Anti-Drug Committee.
