The junta, which has been conducting military offensives since April in an attempt to regain control of the Hpakant area, is now reportedly relocating some of its forces toward Kamai, according to local sources.
The withdrawing troops are said to be from the groups stationed around Maw Si Zar Phyar Kung and the Amaik Pone side, totaling around 200 soldiers. Locals reported that the withdrawal began on October 14.
Analysts noted that the junta has repeatedly launched offensives in the Hpakant region, deploying and expanding its troop presence to nearly 1,000 soldiers in order to maintain control and continue its attacks.
Although some troops have withdrawn, others remain stationed in areas such as Maw Wan Kalay, Maw Wan Gyi, and Maw Shan. Meanwhile, in villages between Hpakant and Nam Hpyit, junta troops have reportedly been present inside the villages for nearly a week, according to residents of Nam Hpyit.
“Some locals fled when the soldiers entered, but we haven’t left yet. The soldiers told us not to be afraid and not to flee. It’s been about a week since they came into the village. Some villagers who fled earlier have also started to return,” said one local resident.
Currently, artillery fire continues to be heard in various parts of the Hpakant area, although the situation near Malang village is reportedly calm. In addition, troops from Light Infantry Battalion 33, those from the SAC base in Mohnyin, and allied Shan Ni militia forces are said to be conducting joint military operations in the region.
The recent troop withdrawal from parts of Hpakant may indicate a strategic repositioning or troop rotation. Observers say the situation in Hpakant remains tense and is being closely monitored.
