At least 30 civilians killed and 42 arrested in Kachin State within two months

According to the monthly report of the Kachin Human Rights Watch (KHRW), at least 30 civilians were killed, 2 others injured, and 42 people were arrested in Kachin State within a two-month period.


The report states that civilians were affected and killed due to airstrikes, heavy artillery shelling, arrests carried out by the military council forces, and shootings by unidentified armed groups.


Among the fatalities, Hpakant Township recorded the highest number of deaths with 15 people, followed by 12 deaths in Bhamaw Township, 2 in Mohnyin, and 1 in Myitkyina.


It is also reported that the military council has been conducting arbitrary arrests of civilians in Myitkyina and Hpakant. On April 1, 7 civilians were arrested in Myitkyina, while 34 people including a doctor were arrested in Hpakant, bringing the total number of detainees to 42 within two months.


Earlier, on March 13, 12 civilians were killed in an airstrike by the military council near Bhamaw. On March 16, a civilian was killed in a shooting by an unidentified armed group in Maw Si Sar village, Hpakant Township. Additionally, on April 14 and April 23, eight young people were killed in the Hpakant area.
