At the Tanghpre village military council checkpoint on the Myitkyina-Putao road, travelers report that youth aged between 20 and 45, both male and female, are not allowed to cross.
A traveler stated, "Those above 45 are all made to go through. Those below 45 are not. Other goods are all allowed through. Older people are also made to pass. Only people between 25 and 45 are not allowed to pass."
Since July 1, strict registration checks have been conducted at the Tanghpre checkpoint, allowing passage only to those holding registrations from Putao, Sumprabum, and Njang Yang townships. Last week, only those above 45 were allowed pass.
A traveler said, "Their concern is that the KIA might recruit soldiers, so they are stopping people of certain ages and youth from crossing. Some have turned back without being allowed through at the gate. For example, a father over 50 came with a child; soldiers let the child through but made the father return. He left the child at home before trying to cross again."
Thus, movement at the Tanghpre military checkpoint is very difficult for adults and youths. Additionally, backhoe equipment is being held and toll money is being collected.
