Six people have died and around 5,000 others have been affected by flooding and flash floods near Laiza, the headquarters area of the Kachin Independence Organization/Army (KIO/KIA), according to reports.

Heavy rain began in the early morning of August 4, causing the Je Yang Stream to flood. As a result, IDP camps in Sut Mu Awng, Hpun Lum Yang, and Je Yang areas were inundated, and with large amounts of mud and debris flowing through, local residents have taken shelter in churches and safer areas.

Alongside the six fatalities, reports state that 460 homes and seven bridges have been damaged. Landslides have also occurred at six locations along the road, damaging bridges which hampering transportation. Affected villages include Hpung Mai Yang, Sut Mu Awng, Hpung Lum Yang, and the Je yang IDP camps, as well as Ja Htu Kawng and Mung Sai Yang.

The sudden flooding has damaged not only homes but also schools, preschools, and churches in the area.

Electric poles were also damaged due to the flooding, resulting in power outages in Laiza and across the border region.

However, responsible departments have reportedly begun restoration and repair work on the damaged roads, bridges, and electricity infrastructure.
