Residents of Myitkyina are calling for the swift arrest of the suspect responsible for the stabbing of a 20 year old girl near Sutawng Pyi Pagoda, Thida Ward, on September 28.
Locals expressed concerns that crime has been on the rise in Myitkyina throughout 2025, including frequent cases of stabbings, robberies, homicides, and the disappearance of children and youths. The public worries that weak law enforcement has emboldened criminals, and people fear further brutal crimes if no decisive actions are taken.
Residents are demanding swift arrest of the attacker and want authorities to take stronger responsibility in addressing the growing crime wave. A 55 year old woman from Myitkyina said, “Myitkyina has become very dangerous in recent times. People have no regard for life anymore. We often hear of killings, stabbings, and robberies almost every day. It no longer feels safe to live here. Parents cannot even allow their grown children to go anywhere without them. Authorities must take action quickly and seriously.”
She added that if such ruthless killers remain at large, the situation poses further danger to others. The victim was identified as Ma Nu Nge Hlaing. She was stabbed in the neck and killed brutally. Her parents are currently working in China, and as a result, only her relatives were able to organize her funeral.
She had been renting a room in Myitkyina’s Shatapru Ward while attending a nurse training course. Local residents further claim that perpetrators of crimes in Myitkyina have rarely been apprehended or prosecuted, leaving the public disheartened and increasingly fearful for their safety.
