In Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin State, incidents of theft and robbery have been increasing. According to an eyewitness, a car was stolen yesterday, 29 January, in Khema Thiri Ward while the owner briefly went into a shop to buy goods.

“He went to buy something and thought it would only take a moment, so he locked the car door but left the key inside. The thief got in and drove away. It seems the thief had been waiting. He tried to chase after it, but couldn’t catch up,” the eyewitness said.

The incident occurred on Khema Thiri Main Road. The stolen vehicle was a black Honda Fit, and it was taken while the owner briefly entered a shop to purchase items.

In addition, it was reported that on the same night, a battery powered motorcycle was stolen from inside a house in Tatkone Ward.

“The gate was locked, and the house door was also locked, but the thief still entered the house and took it. He took the gate keys and motorcycle keys from inside the house and stole the motorcycle,” said a person close to the victim.

Although the motorcycle was kept inside the house, the thief entered the home and stole it. The person added that the increase in theft and robbery is due to the growing number of gambling dens.

“The thief knew exactly where everything was. It’s fortunate that no one in the house was harmed. These thefts are happening because there are so many gambling places,” he said.

Residents say that burglaries involving intruders entering homes are happening frequently in Myitkyina, and that the rise in gambling dens in the city has contributed to the increase in theft and robbery.
