Hpakant Township, Kachin State, In recent days, the prices of food, meats, and fish have risen dramatically in Hpakant Township, according to local residents.
“Dried foods aren't up much, but it's the meat and fish prices that are rising. Chicken meat is now over 100,000 kyat per viss. Even if you want to buy, you can't get it. Eggs are not available either; the goods are spoiled. A sack of rice is now around 250,000 kyat. Rice prices have been rising for a while since around the start of July. But the chicken price just shot up within the last three days,” one Hpakant resident said.
Currently in Hpakant, a sack of rice costs about 250,000 kyat, an egg is selling for between 1,000–1,500 kyat each, and a viss of chicken is approaching 100,000 kyat.
Additionally, gasoline (92 octane) is priced at 8,800 kyat per liter, 95 octane is almost 9,000 kyat, and diesel is over 8,000 kyat per liter. The price of one tical of gold has reached up to 7.9 million kyat.
A local resident noted that price hikes may be due to road closures in and out of Hpakant. Although the Nant Yar Road has been reopened, the Woi Kha Road remains shut.
Meanwhile, fighting remains intense between the military and the KIA in Hpakant Township, with ongoing airstrikes resulting in civilian casualties.
