Civilians Killed and Injured in Artillery Explosion in Hpakant

It is reported that civilians have been killed and injured due to indiscriminate shelling by the military commission in the Hpakant area.


At around 10:00 PM on April 23, an artillery shell fired from the military base at Hpakant Tatma Kone landed and exploded inside the Nam Hpyit Catholic IDP camp. As a result, the son of a church caretaker was killed, and two other civilians were also injured.


The deceased has been identified as 13 year old Maung Sut Jat Awng. His mother and younger brother also sustained injuries to their legs from shrapnel and are currently receiving medical treatment.


Local residents stated that there was no active fighting near the displacement camp at the time, and they described the shelling as a deliberate attack targeting civilians.


It is further reported that joint military forces from the Tatma Kone base frequently conduct indiscriminate artillery shelling. On April 7, artillery fired from the same base also landed and exploded in Maw Si Zar village, damaging residential houses and injuring two men.
