Locals have expressed concerns that frequent road closures on the Myitkyina-Putao route are making life increasingly difficult. Residents said that the military junta’s frequent inspections and roadblocks at checkpoints in villages such as Lamung Zup, Chyinghkrang, and Tanghpre have caused significant disruptions for travelers.
“A few days ago, they allowed both incoming and outgoing vehicles to pass. But since the 29th, they’ve stopped letting us go. For those of us already struggling to make a living day by day, this makes things worse. When the cargo trucks are no longer allowed to move, life becomes even harder,” said one Putao resident.
Amid ongoing political instability and frequent road closures, residents fear that commodity prices in the Putao area will rise again to previous levels.
This year has been more difficult than previous years, residents said, noting that crop fields have also been damaged by rat infestations, worsening food shortages. The renewed road closures have made conditions even tougher for the people.
The military council closed the Myitkyina-Putao road on October 23. Although it temporarily allowed only outgoing vehicles from Putao to pass on October 27, by October 29, both incoming and outgoing routes were completely blocked again, according to reports.
