Although travelers have been using alternate routes to travel between Myitkyina and Mandalay, continuous rain during the rainy season has caused severe road damage. As a result, some food supplies in Kachin State have become scarce, and prices have risen, according to local residents of Myitkyina.

“Since the political situation deteriorated, most people use the alternate routes to travel on the Myitkyina-Mandalay road. However, during the rainy season, traveling becomes more difficult. Sometimes when roads are blocked, shortages and price hikes of goods often occur during this rainy period,” said a local woman.

The main trade route for Kachin State, the Mandalay-Myitkyina road, has suffered damage due to heavy rain, especially on the Peygyi and Spenantha alternate routes. Landslides have made travel difficult, causing traffic jams in Shwebo and Vinnaka areas. Additionally, travelers using the Myitkyina-Katha-Kyanyat road must cross two ferry points, leading to longer travel times.

Due to these travel delays, transporting goods to Kachin State has become challenging. This has caused shortages of some products and increased transportation costs, which in turn have driven up prices.

Currently, the damaged Myitkyina-Mandalay road caused by ongoing rain is expected to delay travel times from six days up to nearly a week, depending on road conditions.
