A coordination meeting on facilitation and cooperation regarding the Ayeyarwady River Project was held on January 20, led by Kachin State Chief Minister U Hkyet Hting Nan, according to reports.

At the meeting, Chief Minister U Hkyet Hting Nan explained the current status of the formation of the Kachin State Local Committee for Facilitation and Cooperation related to the Ayeyarwady River Hydropower Project, along with guidance, directives, assigned duties, and the possibility of further expanding the committee.

Following this, members of the local committee raised questions and held discussions regarding future action plans to be carried out in line with the committee’s responsibilities. The Chief Minister reportedly coordinated and provided guidance on the upcoming work plans to be implemented.

Meanwhile, local residents of Myitkyina Township had earlier staged a protest on January 10, marking Kachin State Day, with more than 60 participants gathering at a location along the Ayeyarwady River bank to oppose the Myitsone Dam project.

It is said that the main objective of holding the protest on Kachin State Day was to urge the Kachin State Government to collectively take action to stop the Myitsone Dam project.

Therefore, local communities are reportedly calling on people across Myanmar to collectively protect and prevent attempts by the military to restart the Myitsone Hydropower Project, which has been suspended for more than a decade due to opposition from the Myanmar public.
