On April 8, 2025, the district court in Mohnyin, Kachin State, sentenced three men—U Moe Hla The, U Kyaw Moe Lwin, and Bo Ye—to 20 years of imprisonment each for repeatedly assaulting a 16-year-old girl with mental health issues. Another accomplice, U Zaw Myint Htwe, who aided in the crime, received a 10-year prison sentence.
The incident occurred in the Auk Kyin neighborhood of Mohnyin, where the perpetrators lured the girl with snacks and money before assaulting her multiple times near a railway station. The victim’s family discovered the crime on June 25, 2024, and filed a case at Mohnyin police station.
Although the court initially promised to deliver a verdict within six months, it took five hearings over nearly ten months to reach a final decision. The sentences were handed down at Mohnyin Prison.
The victim’s family expressed hope that such severe punishments would deter future crimes and serve as an example. They emphasized the importance of justice for underage victims.
This case highlights the challenges faced by vulnerable individuals and their families in seeking justice amidst delays and systemic hurdles.
