It has been reported that a woman was robbed of her purse in broad daylight in front of the Jade Roundabout, a busy area in downtown Myitkyina.

“I was riding my battery-powered motorcycle into town, and I put my purse in the front of the bike. Two men on another motorcycle came up and snatched it. It happened right in front of the Jade Roundabout in Myitkyina, at a time when there were a lot of people around,” said the woman who was robbed.

Her purse contained 400,000 kyats and 300 Chinese yuan. The two men sped away on their motorcycle, making it impossible to chase after them.

Most of the victims in such street robberies and muggings are women. Despite the increasing number of thefts and robberies, the local police station has not taken any responsibility or action, forcing people to look after their own safety and belongings, the victim added.

Since the breakdown of administrative order, residents say that there has been no response from the authorities in Myitkyina, and incidents of theft, armed robbery, and drug dealing and usage are becoming more and more common each day.

As a result, people are advised not to travel alone but with companions. Recently, there has been an increase in cases of women being robbed of valuable items and being mugged by men on motorcycles in Myitkyina.
