With the current political instability and the difficulty in earning a livelihood, residents say that urban safety has deteriorated, and incidents of theft, robbery, and murder are increasing day by day.
In Myitkyina city as well, stabbing incidents, robberies, and thefts are occurring more frequently, and it is noted that these crimes are being committed openly by young adults.
“All over the place, there are reports of motorcycles being stolen, of people being attacked and losing their belongings. There’s no more security. Commuting requires constant caution. It’s distressing. If possible, it’s important to avoid traveling alone in isolated places,” a Myitkyina local said.
It is reported that, there were at least seven cases of robbery and stabbing in Myitkyina during the month of August, and one man reportedly died from stab wounds.
It is also reported that thieves are acting in groups, dividing areas, and are stealing motorcycles. As a result, in the 10 mile village, locals are taking turns providing security.
While locals want responsible authorities to deal with the rampant robberies and stabbings in the city, they are dissatisfied that, at present, the government is mainly focusing only on arresting motorcycles or the vehicles, rather than addressing the root of the crimes.
