Despite ongoing opposition, another public consultation meeting regarding the Myitsone hydropower project was held yesterday in Myitkyina with members of the Kachin State Local Committee, according to sources.

Previously, on May 5, local residents of Kachin State and 49 Kachin civil society organizations jointly issued a statement opposing the implementation of the Myitsone project.

However, on May 6, the 16th meeting related to the Ayeyarwady Myitsone Hydropower Project was held in Myitkyina. The discussion and public engagement event was led by the Kachin State Local Committee for Assistance and Cooperation on the hydropower project, where committee members met and consulted with local residents.

The meeting was attended by Kachin State Chief Minister U Hkyet Hting Nan, members of the state government, local committee members, departmental officials, and business representatives.

During the discussion, committee members including Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation Dr. Aung Win, Chairman of the Kachin State Engineering Association U Tun Tun Hlaing, economist U Mung Ring La, China-Myanmar relations analyst U Naw Htoi, and U Jan Hkun (aka U Naw Hkun) presented and explained technical information related to the project.
