Although the Chinese government has reopened the Muse-Namhkam border trade gate in Northern Shan State since early November, reports indicate that goods still cannot be transported freely. Only items approved by the Chinese authorities are currently allowed to pass through.
At present, only a limited amount of corn, rice, and charcoal from Myanmar can be exported to China, while China mainly exports food items into Myanmar. Local residents in Namhkam say that no machinery or industrial equipment of any kind has been permitted to enter Myanmar since the reopening.
Residents of the Muse-Namhkam villages said that during the period when cross border trade was unrestricted, most locals relied primarily on corn, rice, tea plantations, and charcoal production for their livelihoods.
After China imposed an indefinite closure of all border trade gates on July 18 last year, many locals who depended on exporting and importing goods suffered serious losses and widespread unemployment.
Even though the border gate was reopened in November after nearly a year of closure, cross border trade has not returned to its previous free flowing state. Due to the continued restrictions, many difficulties remain for traders and local residents.
As a result, a large number of locals have now stopped working in tea farming, corn and rice cultivation, and charcoal production, and these livelihoods have become increasingly rare in the area.
