Although most internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the Mai Na KBC displacement camp have already returned to their places of origin, those who are still unable to return due to various reasons will be provided with accommodation by a team led by Kachin State Chief Minister Hkyet Hting Nan, according to information from the displaced persons.

“Yesterday, Kachin State Chief Minister Hkyet Hting Nan visited the camp. The Chief Minister mostly encouraged people to return to their places of origin. However, he said that those who are unable to return due to various reasons will be provided with a place to live. For construction, the existing houses where we are currently staying will have to be dismantled and reused,” said one displaced person from the Mai Na IDP camp.

The Mai Na KBC displacement camp is scheduled to be closed in March. While most of the displaced persons who have lived there for more than a decade are returning to their places of origin, some are still facing difficulties in doing so. As a result, they submitted requests to the Chief Minister, leading to the current arrangement, according to sources.

Along the Myitkyina-Bhamaw road, although the villages are under KIA controlled territory, the security situation is still not considered reliable. After the camp is closed, the number of displaced persons who will live in the area arranged by the Chief Minister is reported to be nearly 150 in total.

At present, as armed clashes across Kachin State are intensifying on a daily basis and the number of displaced people continues to increase, the Mai Na camp is nevertheless set to be closed. Therefore, it is reported that the camp has not accepted new displaced persons for several years.
