Due to ongoing clashes along the Hpakant-Kamai road, drivers are warning people not to use this route over the next few days.
One driver said, “If it’s not urgent, it’s better not to go. The military has launched an offensive, so there have been engagements between the two sides. The military is firing heavy weapons and laying mines, and there are also civilians who have been injured.”
Fighting between the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) and allied forces, and the junta’s troops, began on August 10 along the Hpakant-Kamai road. The clashes have been intense near Ma U Pin village, and there are concerns about landmine risks.
The clashes erupted after the junta’s forces arrived in the area with full military strength, and as of now, fighting is still ongoing. It is also reported that renewed clashes have broken out along some exit routes from Hpakant.
At the end of May, after junta troops entered Hpakant town, fighting along the Hpakant-Kamai road had temporarily stopped but it has now flared up again.
KIA and KPDF forces have warned people to be cautious of heavy artillery, drones, and airstrikes from the military in the fighting areas around Hpakant.
