In Kachin State, Hpakant region, in the villages of Sharaw Hka and Nyaung Pin Kung, since August 3rd, fighting between KIA/KPDF forces and the military council troops has resulted in civilian casualties caused by large caliber artillery shells fired by the military council.
On August 4th, it was reported that a large caliber artillery shell fired by the military council exploded inside a residential house in Myauk Phyu village, killing a 5 year-old child and a 35 year old man, while about 7 civilians were severely injured.
According to a local resident of Hpakant town, "Since August 3rd, KIA/KPDF have been launching offensive operations on Sharaw Hka and Nyaung Pin Kung villages, and the fighting has not only been on the frontline but also artillery shells have been fired inside residential areas. Tonight, even small children were affected, and there is nowhere safe for civilians to flee."
Due to the artillery fire from the military council, within two days, August 3rd and 4th, 3 civilians including a 5 year old child were killed, and about 10 civilians were severely injured.
In addition, on August 3rd at around 6 PM, a large caliber shell fired by the military council exploded in Nat Zin kone of Sharaw Hka village, killing a 21 year old Rakhine man and seriously injuring another person. Also, that same day, two civilians in San Kyoi village were severely injured due to artillery fire from the military council.
