An activist in HIV prevention said that due to the high rate of HIV infection in Mohnyin Township, Kachin State, sex workers need to be given an open-minded training on HIV prevention.

“In Mohnyin, before 2021, you couldn’t ask for girls at Karaoke and restaurants. But after 2021, the job opportunities for women and girls became very rare. So, the young girls gave us their phone number to call them, if the people who come and have fun on KTV want girls. Some girls don’t always work in KTV, so they can’t be added to the list of sex workers. But when they have sex with the partners they are comfortable with, they usually don’t use protection. This is how HIV Silent Carriers increase,” said the activist.

“Young girls don’t always work at KTVs. If they meet a rich man and earn thousands of money, they don’t come to KTV anymore. They come back when they need money or want to have fun. They also have boyfriends, so the rate of infection is unimaginable and it’s extremely complicated,” said a young man working at KTV.

According to a man who enjoys singing on KTV, the girls are not officially employed at KTV and Restaurants in Mohnyin.

It is known from the community close to the restaurant and KTV operators that the departments and armed officials often come to have fun in restaurants and KTVs, and have fun with girls without paying anything.
