Pang Wa, Kachin State – A severe economic downturn has left residents of Pang Wa struggling to make ends meet as job opportunities vanish and living costs soar, local sources report.
"Before, we had rare earth mining and gambling businesses running here. The town was busy, and people could earn a living. Now, all the casinos are closed, and only a few mining sites remain operational. The economy has collapsed, and even basic survival is difficult," a local woman told Pajau Media.
The town once thrived on mining and gambling revenue, supporting small businesses and markets. However, recent administrative changes under the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) government have led to stricter regulations, shutting down gambling operations and drastically reducing mining activities.
"Even vegetables have become expensive because the border gate remains closed. We can't grow much here due to poor soil and unpredictable weather, so we're forced to buy everything at high prices," she added.
Pang Wa’s border crossing, a lifeline for trade, remains shut, exacerbating shortages of food and consumer goods. Meanwhile, poor agricultural conditions leave residents dependent on inflated market prices.
The KIO administration, which governs Pang Wa along with Chiphwi, Phimaw, and Kanpaiti, has initiated development plans for the region. However, locals say recovery is slow, and immediate relief is urgently needed.
