It has been learned from a local resident that electricity was restored in Hpakant town, Kachin State, on September 27 after nearly three months of blackout.
The blackout in Hpakant began on July 9 due to issues along the 66 KV power line, including the clearing of tree branches, trees falling onto the line during heavy rains that broke SHP tension poles, as well as other incidents causing line disruptions, according to a statement from the Hpakant electricity office.
Although electricity has now been restored, only the Hpakant feeder is currently operating. The Lone Khin and Seik Mu feeders still require detailed ground inspections before power can be supplied, and the electricity office explained that further work will continue once the Hpakant feeder is fully operational.
“I heard that electricity has been restored in Hpakant, but not in Lone Khin yet. Even if it returns, I don’t think it will be stable. Using solar power is actually more convenient,” said a local resident of Lone Khin.
In several villages of Lone Khin and Seik Mu, even where electricity has returned, extended blackouts had led to theft of power cables. Because of that, local residents had to spend additional money to purchase and reinstall cables.Despite these efforts and expenses, many villagers remain worried that electricity supplies will not be stable and outages will continue.
Currently, towns including Myitkyina, Waimaw, Mohnyin, Mogaung, Namti, Hopin, and Hpakant in Kachin State are receiving distributed electricity from the Chiphwe hydropower plant with a capacity of 40 MW.
