Buga Electricity Company, which distributes electricity in Myitkyina and Waingmaw, Kachin State, announced that it will only be able to distribute electricity for a limited time from December 20th, 2023 until January 20th, 2024.
In that announcement, the wards and villages in Myitkyina and Waingmaw will be divided into group (A) and group (B) and the electricity will be distributed once every 4 hours each group by a rotating system.
In relation to that notification letter, an interview with an employee of Buga Electricity Company said as below.
“Due to the armed clashes, some power plants were destroyed. Therefore, we can no longer generate enough power, and we can only provide it part-time,” he said.
During the armed clashes, Pajau Power Plant and Power Lines were slightly damaged by aerial bombardment. According to the above statement, there was a delay in the distribution of electricity to the city.
Buga Electricity Company as the main power grid, there are Mali, Pajau and Chiphwi Power Plants as a small reserve plant. Among those Power Plants, the power lines of Mali Power Plant and Pajau Power Plant were slightly damaged due to the aerial bombardment during the armed clashes, which occurred in the late October and early November, according to an employee of Buga Electricity Company.
The extent of the damage is that the Mali Power Plant was completely destroyed and the Pajau Power Plant was only slightly damaged, but the electricity is no longer available due to the power line tower that runs from those plants was broken near Kandaw Yang village.
Therefore, in current situation, only a Chiphwi power plant has access to the reserve power grid, which cannot provide enough electricity to the city at the same time, so it can only be provided in-turns for a limited period of time.
In addition, it is difficult to go and fix the damaged power plant and broken power lines during this time of armed clashes. It is known that Myitkyina and Waingmaw have not received regular electricity for a long time.
