In Putao Township and Machanbaw Township, upland crops have been destroyed by a rat outbreak, leaving farmers worried that they may face difficulties with their livelihoods, according to local residents.

At present, about 85 percent of upland farms have been damaged, and there is a possibility that paddy fields may also be affected, said a farmer from Machanbaw Township.

"Nearly all the upland farms are ruined. Out of 10 farms, at least 8 have been lost. This year, rats and birds have destroyed crops badly. The upland fields are almost gone. Rice paddy fields are also now at risk of rat damage. The crops are just beginning to sprout in some places, but in certain areas, rats are already eating heavily. There is no way to stop it," he said.

In Sumprabum Township of Putao District, upland crops were already severely damaged earlier this year, and the rat outbreak is now spreading further into Putao and Machanbaw Townships. Farmers fear that if the rat infestation continues to affect the paddy fields as well, there could be a shortage of rice in the region.
