Fierce clashes have resumed between two sides in Hpakant Township, Kachin State, starting from early this morning, with the military reportedly providing support using heavy artillery, according to local residents.
“Around early this morning, we could hear continuous gunfire and explosions from heavy weapons. We also heard that intense fighting is taking place between the two sides,” said a local resident.
Beginning today, April 2, clashes have been reported again in areas including Maw Wan Gyi, Maw Wan Lay, Hpa Pyin, Yuma village, and the Mashi Kahtawng ward in Hpakant Township. During the fighting, the military has been firing indiscriminately from positions equipped with heavy weapons, including the Hpakant strategic hill, sources said.
Due to the military’s use of drones and heavy artillery, there has been damage to homes, and civilian casualties, including deaths and injuries, have also been reported.
Although the situation in Hpakant had been relatively calm in recent days, fighting has resumed today. Joint forces of the KIA have warned civilians to remain cautious in their movement and daily activities.
