Four Civilians Killed, Six Others Seriously Injured in a Single Day in Hpakant

In Seng Tawng village, Hpakant, a nine year old girl was killed when a 120 mm artillery shell fired by the Military Council struck. A 70 year old grandmother and three other children were also seriously injured and remain in critical condition.


“Around 4 p.m. today in Seng Tawng, near the old road to the former Kawng San village, an artillery shell landed between the hills. Three children and a grandmother were hit. One child died instantly, while the other two children and the grandmother sustained severe injuries,” a local resident said yesterday.


Additionally, at around 9 a.m. on September 17, an artillery shell fired by the Military Council exploded near Sharaw Hka Catholic Church, killing one civilian, according to locals.


Similarly, around 10:30 a.m., in Hpakant’s Maw Wan ward near the corner of Min Min Kyaw fuel shop, a man was shot dead after being hit twice by gunfire from the Military Council forces.


At around 11 a.m. the same day, near San Chyoi football ground market in Hpakant, another man was shot dead when a group of Military Council troops arrived and opened fire.


In the afternoon of September 17, locals reported that the Military Council forces were able to seize control of San Chyoi village in Hpakant. As a result, within just one day in the Hpakant area, four civilians were killed and a total of six people were seriously injured.


On September 16 as well, an artillery shell landed near the Aye Mya Thaya market, where a child was hit by shrapnel. Residents report that Military Council troops, stationed within Hpakant town and in Byuha Hill, have been firing artillery and drones at surrounding civilian areas on a daily basis, even when no battles are taking place.
