On June 16, 2025, the external market price for one tical of gold in Myanmar surged to nearly 8 million kyat (7,990,000 kyat), while the US dollar exchange rate reached around 4,560 kyat per dollar, according to market reports.

However, the Yangon Region Gold Entrepreneurs Association (YGEA) set its reference price for June 15 at only 5.9 million kyat per tical, but it was reported that gold was not actually being sold at this official rate on the ground.

YGEA’s reference price ranged from 5.82 million kyat per tical between June 6 and 12, rising to 5.85 million on June 13, and reaching 5.9 million kyat on June 14. Due to the much higher external market price, nearly 8 million kyat, over 10 gold business owners were reportedly summoned for questioning.

Global gold prices continued to rise this week, and domestic gold and US dollar prices also remained high. The gold market remains volatile, and prices may fluctuate depending on time and location.
