In the Hpakant area, where fighting has intensified, the military council has closed the city’s entrance and exit roads starting from July 18. As a result, trucks waiting in line on the road have had their raw goods, meat, and fish spoiled and discarded.
Due to the prolonged road blockade, trucks waiting for clearance to pass have suffered spoilage of their meat, fish, and fresh goods, forcing them to dispose of these items, according to a local from the Indawgyi area.
“On this side, around the Hpakant-Indawgyi road, some trucks are stuck, and some who can return have turned back. The main blocked sections are at Lung Tung Gate and Nam Mun Gate. Because trucks coming toward Hpakant are stuck for days, pigs, chickens, and dogs have gathered. As for some fish and fresh vegetables, it's so spoiled there isn't even enough to collect, it all rotted,” said the local.
Some trucks coming from Hpakant are inspected by the army and are allowed to pass during the day only at Lung Tung Gate. However, trucks heading into the city are not allowed through, which is why goods on the trucks have spoiled and been wasted.
The two main roads delivering goods into Hpakant town, the Hpakant-Kamaing road in the east and the Hpakant-Indawgyi road in the south remain blocked.
As a result, current prices of goods in the Hpakant area have risen sharply, and some goods are expensive or even unavailable to purchase, causing hardship for local residents.
