The Kachin State government has started selling fuel to rice farmers in the Putao region at a rate of 6,470 kyats per liter. However, local residents said that only two gallons per acre are allowed to be purchased.
Starting from May 23, fuel has been sold in Mula Shidi Ward at a price of just over 6,000 kyats per liter. Only two gallons are allowed per household, and buyers must present farmland documents and household registration papers in order to purchase the fuel, locals said.
However, some farmers are worried that the fuel being sold this year could be low-quality, similar to last year.
“Last year, Chief Minister Hkyet Hting Nan himself came and sold diesel for the Putao region at half the local market price. But the diesel turned out to be low quality. It was not useful at all and even damaged machines. We are worried the same thing could happen again this year,” a local resident said.
Currently, the market price of fuel in the Putao region is around 15,000 kyats per liter. It is reported that the government and ministerial teams are reselling fuel at nearly half the market price.
