Although the Gwihka-Indawgyi road leading to Hpakant town in Kachin State has been reopened by the Military Council, drivers report that passage is only allowed upon making payments. On the Indawgyi road section under Military Council control, travelers must go through a Military Council checkpoint at Nam Mun Pass, then pass SNA (Shanni Nationalities Army) checkpoints in Nam Mun town, before reaching the Lonton checkpoint.
At Lungtung, drivers said they are only allowed to pass after making a payment to the Military Council. “A car has to pay 300,000 kyats at the Lungtung Military Council checkpoint. If we don’t say we’re going to Hpakant-Lonekhin side and instead say we’re heading to the nearby Nyaungpin village area, they allow it,” one driver said.
The Military Council had closed passage along the Gwihka-Indawgyi road since July 18, and locals said mines had been planted near Nam Mun, Mai Nawng, and along the roadside near the Lungtung route in the Indawgyi area, urging travelers to exercise caution.
On September 25, a man from Kunmana village was killed after stepping on a landmine planted by the Military Council near the Lungtung checkpoint.
