In the northern regions of Kachin State, including Putao and Lang Se, continuous heavy rainfall in recent days has led to flooding and frequent small-scale landslides, according to local reports.
“For the past few days, relentless rain has been falling, causing landslides and road damage in mountainous areas like Putao, Lang Se, and along the Hpimaw and Pangwa routes,” said a resident of Lang Se.Since early July, persistent rainfall in the Putao region has triggered flooding that has reached villages and neighborhoods, with heavy rain continuing as of now, locals report.
Additionally, in the Hpakant region, particularly around the Lone Khin jade mining area, excessive rainfall has caused water levels to rise since yesterday, leading to flooding. A resident of Hpakant stated, “Here in Lone Khin, the rain hasn’t stopped, and water started flooding the area yesterday. It’s already entering the neighborhoods. If the rain continues like this, the flooding could worsen.”
Furthermore, rising water levels at the Hpakant Hpa Pyin boat jetty have made it impossible for boats to operate, according to additional reports. In early June, low-lying areas of Myitkyina and the Chipwi region also experienced flooding. With the ongoing heavy rainfall, there are growing concerns about further flooding. The water level of the Mali Hka River is currently just 509 centimeters (approximately 16.5 feet) below the critical mark of 1,200 centimeters.
