It has been learned from local sources that in Hpakant, which has been without electricity for nearly two months, fuel has also run out in recent days.
“In the past, there used to be occasional blackouts, and sometimes electricity would come back. But now, it’s been a complete outage for over a month, ever since the fighting broke out. Since the power went out, people in town have been using their own generators for whatever work they needed to do. Now, fuel shops have closed, saying that fuel trucks could not enter, so we can’t do anything anymore,” a Hpakant resident said.
Until early August, some fuel shops were still selling with time limits, but in recent days, nearly all fuel shops have reportedly shut down.
Another resident said, “Some shops closed due to fuel shortages, but there are also people selling in front of these shops by the bottle. They had bought the fuel in barrels ahead of time and are now selling it by the bottle at inflated prices. Because of these greedy people hoarding and reselling, we can’t get fuel.”
Hpakant residents already face severe hardships in security, essential goods, and transportation due to the military situation between the two armed groups. Now, with the combined impact of no electricity and a shortage of fuel, locals fear living conditions will become even more difficult.
