Due to the ongoing conflict between both sides in the jade producing region of Hpakant in Kachin State, the Hpakant–Kamai Road, which had been closed for more than three months, has now been reopened for use.
The closure of entry and exit routes to and from Hpakant town had disrupted the flow of goods within the region, causing an extreme surge in commodity prices, and resulting in significant hardships for locals and jade traders.
A local resident from Nam Ya Village said,
“As soon as the vehicles came into the village, everyone rushed out to watch, they were so happy. Even we, who were just sitting idly around, saw over 20 vehicles in total, including goods trucks and motorcycles loaded with chicken baskets.”
Another Hpakant local also expressed joy: “They brought in trucks loaded with potatoes and onions. Some trucks were carrying chickens and pigs. We were honestly thrilled. Now that the goods trucks have come in, we just hope prices can return to normal.”
The Hpakant–Kamai Road, which had been blocked for three months due to armed tensions from both sides, was reopened on August 2 by the concerned parties. On August 3, goods vehicles were finally able to enter Hpakant town again.
