Residents in the Hpakant region are now facing not only the dangers of intensified armed clashes but also the growing effects of seasonal flooding, according to reports.

Locals have been forced to flee their homes due to the ongoing battles between the military junta forces and opposition groups. Explosive artillery shelling, frequent airstrikes, and gunfire between both sides have been reported in residential areas. Added to this are soaring commodity prices and relentless torrential rains, creating a cascade of hardships for local communities.

In recent days, persistent rain has caused flooding in some neighborhoods of Hpakant Town, resulting in disruptions and difficulties for the affected residents. Those living along the Uru Stream are especially concerned, as water levels continue to rise and pose a growing threat.

One Hpakant resident said, "While trying to deal with the fighting, now we’re also dealing with floods. It’s hard to know which danger to worry about more. If this rain keeps up, like in previous years, we might get hit by another major flood and this time, there’s no place left to turn to for help and even if there were, help isn’t easy to come by," the person said.

Severe rainfall has also caused structural damage to roads, especially at Maumaw Layang where the road has been damaged by excess water. Roads across Hpakant Town are also deteriorating due to the rain, making movement and transportation increasingly difficult.

Of special concern are the communities living along Uru Stream, where rising water levels have raised fears of inundation and further displacement.
